The first
customers walked through the front doors and into the new
addition on the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend. Rangeley Lakes
Builders Supply now offers 8000 square feet of retail space that
is filled with a tremendous range of hardware and house-wares.
Without a doubt, the store has evolved into an impressive
structure that will offer the most complete selection of
building products in the area.
With the expanding
store comes the need for a larger staff to keep things running
smooth. In the past few months we have added some new faces and
promoted some "old-timers". Den`e White, a hardworking 2002
graduate of Mt Abram’s High School, is helping to keep lumber
moving into and out of the yard. Working along side of her is
Daren White. Daren is returning to us after three years of
working in the construction field. He and his wife Laura live in
Phillips and have a son named Micheal. They are expecting a new
addition to the family in 2004. Ward Bredeau has recently been
promoted to yard foreman after many years of hands on experience
at the logistical end of the business. Congratulations Ward! We
can only hope that one day you will use your skills to build
your fiancée a house . |
|
If you have called
us recently, you may have been helped by Hermila Perreault, our
newest receptionist. Born in Colombia, she has lived in Rangeley
for the past 5 years with her husband Ron. Our sales staff has
received two new additions. The first is the mighty Joe Young
from Andover. Joe’s past experience as part owner of a
construction company is bound to serve him well when it comes to
take offs and quotes. Our second addition to our sales staff is
Wade Bredeau. Wade has been the yard foreman for several years
and brings with him a tremendous amount of experience in the
lumber field. Among other skills, Wade is the man to see when
you need the best pricing on windows.
Can anyone guess
who recently became a grandmother? Though she hides it well, and
for the record she is younger than Doug, Marlene Knowles
received a new addition to the family that elevated her to
grandmother. Last but certainly not least, we would like to
congratulate Kris Walton on his engagement to Leslie Stone. Good
Luck!! |

Feature
Employee |
| Bobby Stewart,
administrative supervisor, keeps the wheels at RLBS and MBBS
turning with sheer willpower in what often becomes a forest
thick with paperwork. Bobby, for those of you that do not
know, is the friendly, intelligent, and ruthlessly efficient
manager of administration at RLBS. Over her 11 years with
the company she has become a miracle maker. Often working
with minimal resources, she has always accomplished the
mission with a level of professionalism that money can’t
buy. Bobby, her husband Neil and her children Neil Jr. and
Chrissy are Rangeley natives. In addition to the long hours
at the Builder’s Supply, she is also very active in the
community and seldom misses a soccer, baseball or basketball
game at the High School. Bobby has done more than just work
at RLBS, she has developed a wealth of knowledge in one of
the most challenging industries out there. |

Now more than
ever, manufacturers are creating new products that eliminate the
potentially harmful chemicals that existed in their old ones.
Rangeley Lakes and Mt Blue Builders’ Supply is proud to announce
the adoption of two product lines that give our customers a
healthy choice between old and new.
For 144 years,
Johns Manville has led the building industry in product
innovations that help to improve our lives. This research has
again paid off as RLBS now offers a complete line of Johns
Manville Formaldehyde Free insulation. Formaldehyde has
traditionally been used as a binding agent in fiberglass
insulation. While there have been no documented problems with
the traditional products, Johns Manville has chosen to eliminate
any concern by discontinuing the use of formaldehyde in this new
line. The new acrylic binder provides us with a product that
will not off-gas formaldehyde inside the home.
The second major
product line to offer environmentally friendly innovations is
pressure treated lumber. With public concern growing over the
arsenic used in CCA, the industry has chosen a voluntary phase
out of CCA before 2004. RLBS has already nearly completed the
switch and has chosen Nature Wood as its replacement. Nature
Wood is an excellent alternative to CCA and uses a Copper Oxide
treatment in place of arsenic. We are excited about these new
products and hope to offer you more "green" choices as they
become available. |

As the
Holiday season gets into full swing, we here at RLBS have
lots to be thankful for. This is a very special year for us.
The final phase in Gary’s three-phase plan is almost
complete! The shelves are being put up, the merchandise
loaded in and Jackie and Gary will be back under the same
roof! (We are hoping this will be a good thing!) Different
from the first two parts is the amount of community members
involved in this leg of the project. Gary’s hardworking
spirit was rallied and we have many people to thank….
Ellen and
Corey Albrecht, Mark Beauregard, Jim Williams, Steve Rogers,
Randy Goodwin, Rex Ellis and crew, Ken MacFawn, Billy
Archard, Tony Polvino, Keith Webber with his crew, Jeep
Wilcox and many, many others.

We have tons of Christmas ideas and gifts

This
project has brought much joy (and headaches) to the
employees here at RLBS. We heard from all of you how much
the old building would be missed. We also appreciated its
quaint charm and history, it’s "little town" feel, and all
the nooks and crannies you could get lost in. But…it was
becoming ill suited for our growing company and frustrating
to the employees. We remember fondly the days of searching
for Bobby in her mounds of paper, but now Bobby and newcomer
Hermilla have ample room for filing and executing their
jobs. Doug, Kris and Marlene can remark on how the tight
office quarters gave new meaning to the words "working
together." Some of you may recall the fingerless gloves
employees had to wear in the winter to accomplish paperwork,
a practice now made obsolete by the new Toyo Stoves. Many of
you, our longtime customers, will also remember the odd
dance of dodging and leaning needed to get to and from each
office. We tell these stories and share these memories with
fondness, but are happy to be a part of the changes. We hope
you too will learn to love the new home of Rangeley Lakes
Builders Supply. There are still corners to get lost in and
memories to be made.

We invite you to come in

great Christmas and house ware items Jackie and Marlene have
brought in again this year.

NEW TECHNOLOGY |
| |
|
Each year RLBS screens the thousands of new
products being offered to the building industry and selects a
few that have proven their worth through a combination of
extensive field testing, a thorough warranty, realistic pricing
and our customers demands. One of the products we are
highlighting this year is Miratec Trim.
Miratec Trim is an engineered wood fiber composite designed
for use in both interior and exterior applications. Miratec,
backed by a 25 year warrantee, is made of a solid, wood fibered
material that will not check, split or crack. It comes in 16
foot lengths that are primed on all four sides and it is
reversible- smooth on one side and textured on the other. The
refined appearance of Miratec makes it an excellent choice for
the trim around your doors and windows. For more information on
Miratec, feel free to stop on by or to check their web site at
www.miratectrim.com.

Putting the finishing
touches on some jobs requires caulking. The thought of
doing this can instill fear in many experienced craftsman,
and rightly so. A sloppy caulking job can ruin the
look of an otherwise excellent piece of work. |
|
The key to a neat
caulking job is ‘less is better’. Always use the smallest
bead possible to do the job. When I cut the tip off a tube
of caulk, I cut only enough off so that the opening is
between 1/32" and 1/16".
I then pierce the inner seal with a piece of 14 gauge
copper wire. Apply the bead smoothly by moving the gun at
a consistent speed. Try to do an entire run without
stopping until you get to the end. With practice you may
get an amazingly smooth bead that requires no further
attention other than staying out of it until it cures.
However, if the bead is lumpy, inconsistent, or just in
need of a little additional smoothing, try this method.
Immediately after applying the bead, put on a latex
painters glove and dip a finger into a small jar of paint
thinner. Run that finger over the entire length of the
bead without stopping until you get to the end. Leave the
bead alone until it cures. If you have a section of the
crack that is not completely filled in, go back over it
later using the same method. Always wipe the tip of the
tube clean before starting the next bead. I can’t stress
enough the importance of keeping the bead small. A 1/4"
wide bead will always be more conspicuous and harder to
make smooth and consistently sized. "A smaller bead is a
neater bead". |
